Wally Kogen spent years under the hood of a car. The intricate workings of a car engine fascinated him for decades. He was quite the popular mechanic. On his 65th birthday he decided he was ready to retire. He had worked hard all these years, and he was ready to spend more time at home. Newly retired, he loved the freedom he now had. He had time to do the things he wanted. But still, there was part of him that wanted to make a little extra money, but this time he wanted something where he could be the boss, where he could spend more time outdoors, and learn a new skill. He finally found it: growing garlic for profit.

Wally knew how popular garlic was. After all, last year Americans consumed over 300 million tons of garlic! It’s the second most-used spice in all the world. So that’s why he was eager to start his own garlic business. It’d give him a chance to make some money, while still enjoying the freedom of his retirement. You can start a garlic business for just a few hundred dollars, so Wally knew that if he lost interest in garlic growing (which he still hasn’t), he wouldn’t be out too much money.

To get his business off to a strong start, Wally surveyed local businesses and other people to find out what varieties of garlic they were looking for. He knew to be a success you have to offer the garlic varieties people want to buy. He then tested his soil’s Ph with a simple test strip. He knew his soil needed to have a Ph between 6.2 and 6.8.

Once he learned that his garden had healthy soil, he began planting garlic bulbs. He knew to be patient. Garlic doesn’t grow overnight. In fact it takes several months. During this time, Wally made sure to give his plants the right amount of water. Not too much. Not too little. The following summer his garlic was grown and ready to be sold. He took some to his old garage, and his old co-workers were delighted to see them.

“Guys, I have a treat for you,” he said, showing the garlic to his old friends. Many were confused at first. Sure garlic tasted great, but what could it do for them? It didn’t take long for Wally to tell them all about the qualities of garlic. Not only can it spice up any dish, but it has several medicinal qualities as well. It can really improve your health. Let’s just say the box of garlic Wally brought was completely empty when he left. Wally left the garage with a smile on his face and money in his pockets. He also started selling his gourmet garlic at the local farmer’s market, where it was such a big hit, he sold out in just three weeks.

Wally is still growing garlic today. It is a booming business, and gives him a fun and profitable activity to do in his retirement.

Growing garlic takes a lot of the same skills Wally used as a mechanic.

Problem-solving - if the garlic is not growing correctly, Wally looks for pests, diseases or other problems, just like if a car’s engine isn’t working properly

Using your hands - Wally is a hands-on kind of guy. Like getting under the hood of a car, growing garlic allows Wally to be moving around and using his hands.

Listening to customers – As a mechanic Wally liked to make a person’s car run just like they wanted. As a garlic grower, he takes pride in growing exactly what his customers want.

Wally continues to grow profitable garlic in his backyard nursery. So can you. To learn more, read Golden Harvest, available at: http://extraincomebulletin.com.
