Debunking the Facebook Hype – How to Use Facebook Pages in Your New Media Strategy
Jan 16th
The flood of traffic Facebook enjoys as the number 2 most trafficked site in the world makes them appealing for business for this reason alone. However, the lack of control over your content, non-business reasons people use Facebook, and their obtuse user interface are all cause for concern. Learn how to use and how not to use Facebook Pages so can create a “Pages” strategy that gives you the best market to medium match.
Everywhere you look companies have Facebook Fanpages: No wait; Facebook Pages. Companies are asking you to become Facebook Fans: No, I mean Facebook Likers (we need a new English word for this one!) For those of you who are blissfully unaware of the Facebook Pages musical chairs, Facebook replaced the Facebook Fan button with a Like button. And therein lies the problem: Facebook owns and controls the platform and severely restricts your ability to manage or remove your content. They give no guarantee whatsoever over how you will be able to use their platform and your content in the future. To put this in perspective, I recently retweeted an article from the Wall Street Journal that discussed the results of a survey: Facebook ranked just above the IRS in customer satisfaction. Ouch!
5 Things the Facebook Evangelists Forgot to Tell You
While Facebook is number 2 in global traffic, only 1/6 of the Facebook users have any interest in using it to follow companies or brands. I discuss this in-depth in my Twitter for Business Article. Their change from the Fan to Like button is intended to broaden that appeal. We will have to wait and see how the Like change effects usage but I believe it will broaden the Page appeal. Maintaining a Company Page is a significant time commitment for a small business. Not every business model will necessarily get a positive ROI unless they can use Facebook in a very specific way.
I do suggest you at least create a Facebook Page account and reserve your business name to keep your options open. Do you have a strategy for how to use a Facebook page that is unique from your website or a blog strategy?
If you are just reiterating tweets, blog posts, or videos that are available elsewhere, your Fanpage will add little value to others or your business. You really need a unique strategy to make a Fanpage work. Paul Colligan uses his Facebook page to host his podcast. Since this is the only place you can subscribe to it outside of iTunes, this is great strategy and his Fanpage has regular updates and adds unique value. My company created a Fanpage for one of our clients that will feature their “stars of the month.” Since they are a Performing Arts Company, this is an extremely compelling and engaging use of their Fanpage. And only people who have “Liked” their page can be considered for this monthly feature so this also creates a unique value proposition for joining their Page. Facebook controls all aspects of the content you post on their site. Perhaps you have heard how Blogger, Squidoo, and other blogging platforms can and do delete entire sites (without warning) for violating their terms of service whether it is done intentionally or not.
If your business relies largely or solely on these blogging platforms or Facebook Pages you are taking a risk. However, just hosting a podcast provides little risk since your RSS feed can be self-hosted on an Amazon S3, uploaded to iTunes, and if anything happened to your Facebook Page, subscribers to the Podcast would still receive their content and the podcast subscription page could easily be moved to a different website.
Do not feel you have to use Facebook Pages if it does not fit your business model. I do however highly recommend Twitter since it is both easy to learn, use, understand, and 51% of users follow companies and brands versus 16% for all other social networking sites. Twitter also complements a blog perfectly. It can easily be set up to automatically tweet (micro-blog) a 140 character headline and summary of your new post to your Twitter followers.
The Fad-Myth and Reality
When octogenarian Betty White says, “I am on the Facebook,” in her latest commercial, it gives you perspective into the depth of the Facebook craze. Everyone, including businesses, are jumping into Facebook and committing significant resources to Pages. But few have any idea how it will benefit their business. Facebook Pages can work amazingly well for some companies. Pepsi demonstrated the power of Facebook Pages with their wildly successful “Refresh Project”. However they were successful because they were very focused on a niche project that allowed their Fans (now Likers) to vote on exactly what Pepsi would do with their Refresh Project; a compelling social campaign that gives back to communities.
What Facebook Fanpages Are Not
I am a believer in social media as a marketing and social networking but I have recently read several articles stating that Facebook Pages will replace blogs as the center of the new media business universe. This statement demonstrates a lack of business acumen and demonstrates how fads can overwhelm reason. While Facebook personal pages are clearly the place of choice to connect with your personal friends, I can tell you with absolute certainty that Facebook business pages will never be the center of the new media universe. As long as Facebook has absolute control over how businesses use their own content, Facebook will never be the center of their online strategy. Not to pile on but their obtuse user interface and indifferent attitude toward their users make them less than appealing for a central business strategy.
How to Use Facebook Business Pages Successfully
If you really want to leverage Facebook for what it is best at, you will need to use it to focus on one important social aspect of your business and build a strategy around it. It must be fun and emotionally engaging. Whether it is a podcast or a customer spotlight, it needs to be social and allow your customers and “Likers” to socially engage and participate. Remember how people use the Facebook platform: They go to Facebook to socialize with their friends. If you develop a Facebook strategy that meets this need, you will succeed on Facebook and build a strong Fan base of loyal “Likers”.
What is your experience with Facebook Pages? Do you like their user experience, are they intuitive to build and use, and what do you like or not like about Pages?

Facebook Layouts and Facebook Backgrounds
Jan 15th
Using alternative Facebook layouts can jazz up your Facebook Profile or Wall, and there are many of these online for to choose free of charge. Be careful in your selection, though because not all are free and you could find yourself faced with a bill.
There are large numbers of different designs of Facebook layouts available, ranging from animal themes, through nature to music, abstract and science themes. Which you choose is up to you. The way they work is very simple: you simply log on to the site involved, choose your theme and download the activation software. Then all you need do is to choose your theme and then click to activate.
Hey presto! Next time you open your Facebook page you will find your theme already uploaded and already making your Facebook page a lot less boring than it was before. If you already have Facebook running when you activate the Facebook layout then either click ‘refresh’ or reload Facebook. If you can’t see a refresh button, right click with the cursor anywhere on your Facebook page and look for ‘refresh’.
The same procedure also works for Facebook backgrounds.
If you use Firefox, and have some Firefox windows running, you will likely be asked to close these before the activation button will operate. Once all your Firefox windows have been closed, simply click on ‘Activate’ and the Facebook layout you have downloaded will be applied to your Facebook page.
There is nothing else that you have to do. You can download a number of different layouts and change them whenever you feel like it simply by activating the new styles. The old one will be deactivated and the new Facebook layout will take its place. You may decide to use a nature theme one day and then change to a sci-fi theme of stars and space ships the next. If you like animals you could have a dog sitting up at each side of your Facebook page or a pair of cats or even penguins.
You can literally use a new design each day to project your mood or your personality. This is a great way achieving this. Such visual changes to your Facebook Profile makes your page stand out, and projects you as an independent soul that can project their own personality on their Facebook page. It is purely a psychological change but it can make a heck of a difference to your kids when they show off their new Facebook layouts to their friends. They will love you for it.
Not only that, but if you are using Facebook in your business as a promotional tool, it will be much more powerful if your page stands out from the rest through your imaginative use of Facebook layouts and Facebook backgrounds. You can even design your own – it is fairly simple to do so, again by means of templates, and then you will truly have a unique Facebook page or Profile that will enable you stand out from the crowd.
Further information on changing your Facebook layouts is available from Facebook Layouts where you will also find information on Facebook Login to help you get into your Facebook account when you have problems logging in.
Basic Facebook Marketing Strategies to Generate Endless Leads and Dominate
Jan 14th
According to Alexa, Facebook is the second most popular website next to Google. I researched more and found that around 30% of the global internet subscribers visit Facebook every day. Facebook currently has 300 million subscribers and is growing rapidly. 45 Million updates are made on Facebook every day and world wide users spend around 8 billion minutes per day.
What does it mean to you as an internet marketer? It is a large gold mine. Isn’t it? However, How are you going to position yourself uniquely and promote your business on Facebook considering the large volume of updates being posted on Facebook every day? How do you grasp the attention of the Facebook users? The purpose of this post is to make you aware of the basic Facebook marketing strategies and tools that you need to successfully generate leads and dominate.
Always remember Facebook is a social network and should not be used to pitch your business. Prosperity in your Facebook marketing is directly proportial to the number of solid relationships developed with fellow users. So, Lets gets started
Facebook Profile
- A picture is worth thousand words. Make sure to add a picture in your profile
- Fill in your past info such as schools went and make it public so that people can find you through search
- Fill in your interests and make it public so that fellow subscribers could relate to you
- Fill in all your websites such as a blog, Twitter, your capture pages etc on your profile. By default, only your primary website is displayed. I would highly recommend to display all your websites in your profile. Anyone visiting your profile page could click on your URLS and learn more about you
Add Friends
After creating a profile, do not wait for things to happen. Go ahead and find and add few friends a day every day. It is advised that you can add up to 25-30 friends everyday. Excessive adding of friends will result in removing your page by Facebook administrators.
Interact with friends through like and comment
Once you have added a few friends and see their content on your home page, start interacting with them by liking and commenting on their updates. Commenting on updates could have a viral effect. When you comment on an update, your comment will show up on the updater’s wall and is visible to all his friends. So, it pays to make intelligent comments and get traffic back to your page. Also, feel free to share quotes, posts, and videos that had a positive impact on you. Key is to interact with Facebook friends as much as possible.
Facebook Photo Albums
Feel free to share your pictures and videos with your friends on Facebook. People would love to know more about you through pictures and videos. If you have been to a networking event and have taken pictures with the leaders and fellow networkers, share those pictures with stories about the events and see the traffic to your website increasing
Facebook Videos
If a picture is worth thousand words, how much is a video worth? In 2009, video marketing has been growing rapidly and is here to stay. Facebook allows you to either upload videos or shoot a video instantly. More you share the videos, better it is. Do share your videos about networking events, funny incidents, achievements and any other video that could have a positive influence on others. I use the video feature of Facebook in a couple of ways and am seeing phenomenal results:
1. I introduce myself to recently added friends. A short video describing who I am and appreciating for friendship
2. I use instant Facebook video recording option to wish birthdays to friends
Facebook Groups
Group positions you as a leader and displays the value you can provide to fellow networkers. Facebook users who join your group can be converted to prospects for your biz by using effective attraction marketing strategies. It pays to establish a group and providing value to the members of the group through emails, invitations to an event etc. I also use groups in Facebook to identify like minded people and to promote my posts.
Facebook Events
Facebook allows you to create a public event ( viewable to all members of Facebook) and provides you URL that can be used to communicate on other social networks like Twitter, MySpace etc. I send an event invitation via email to all my group members. Event feature keeps track of the users status (attending, not attending, may be) about the event. I see an increase in numbers for the event when I blast a reminder email to people who were not sure or were planning to attend.
Facebook Wall posts
Evey user in Facebook has a wall where he posts messages and moderates the comments made. If you are a core Facebook user, I am sure that you must be posting and promoting your content on your wall. However, It is worth much more to learn how to post your content effectively on walls of the members having a huge number of friends. It can be done by giving a lot of value that could be beneficial to the users visiting the page. Facebook will disable your account if they see you spamming. So, be cautious while using this approach.
Facebook Notes
Do you have a self hosted word press blog? If no, I would highly recommend you to start blogging and provide valuable content. Facebook notes is an awesome feature you can use to make your valuable blog content visible publicly to all members of Facebook. Also, there are applications that imports your blog content into the notes in an automated way. Isn’t that cool?
This feature would increase your blog traffic tremendously and ultimately your sales if you are using the blog as central hub/nerve center as I mentioned in my Attraction Marketing Blueprint post.
Facebook Applications
I am not a big fan of applications on Facebook as I generate enough traffic using the resources mentioned above. However, there are couple of applications that I personally use
Vuyou (Video Email Application): If you are an internet marketer and are generating leads through various marketing strategies like PPC, classifieds etc, you already might know the value of connecting with the prospect. I use this FREE video email application to connect with my leads as soon as they enter in to my sales funnel.
Networked Blogs: I use this application to increase the visibility for my blog. This is a cool application which allows Facebook users to subscribe to my blog and access my updates regularly.
