Adding the Facbook ‘Like’ Button to Your Website
Nov 15th
What does adding this small piece of script to your webpage do for you?
Well, assuming that you do have some reasonable amount of traffic and that a few people “like” your article or webpage enough to take the time to click the little “thumbs up” icon, your link can be exposed to hundreds, thousands, or even, dare I say it, millions of people!!!
Okay, maybe 10 or so, but hey, that’s better than a stick in the eye, right?
Seriously, two things in play here:
1. The value, or percieved value of the content of your site, as reflected in traffic you already have, and…
2. The number of people who are attracted to the facebook profile of the person who clicks your “like” button.
Sounds kinda kinky if you say it THAT way.
However, anything (legal and moral) that gets the word out is valuable as far as website promotion is concerned. When someone clicks the Facebook “like” button on your page, they are given the opportunity to add a link to, and a comment about, your webpage to their Facebook wall. If their friends have similar tastes or interests, or if the link is interesting enough on its own, some of those friends may drop by and take a look at your webpage themselves.
Here’s where the “millions of people” theory kicks in.
If THOSE people like your page and click the button, now they are exposing your site to THEIR circle of friends. In theory, this is damn near endless, but in reality, unless you have some heavy duty something about your page, don’t expect more than a couple of clicks at best.
But, maybe your page is different! We all like to think that. Guess that’s why I have Facebook’s “like” button on a few of my pages.
Adding the button is super easy, if you know how to add code to your page and can do so.
Simply go to Facebook’s own set of instructions at http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like and do what they tell you.
Yes, Virginia, it IS that simple!
Once you have added the Facebook “like” button to your website, just sit back and wait for the traffic to roll in. On the other hand, maybe you should spend your time while your waiting, implementing other Internet marketing techniques as well while upgrading the quality of your website in order to inspire your visitors to tell others how much they “like” your page.
