Getting a Domain Name for Your Business
Dec 29th
Planning an online business is crucial especially if you want this business venture to be your staple source of income. For those who want to try out with online businesses, there are things that you need to learn first before you take your first step. These steps are very necessary and they need to be perfect.
You need to have your own domain. A domain can easily be purchased for mere dollars but the problems after that might be challenging for some. You need to find a domain-name that has not yet been taken by others. As you already know, the internet has a lot of domains and domain-names and we are counting by billions. So, how do you get a unique domain-name that stands out from the billions of domain names from all over the world?
Here are some of the ways in which you can get a unique domain-name for your website.
1. Choose something that is very easy to memorize. Pick a name that does not need the brain to even try to remember it. Make a name that easily pops into mind but still comes off as something unique and original.
2. Always end your domain with.com. This allows you to have millions of chances to gain customers and people easily get access to your website. Most domains have.com but you can also buy other extensions if you want. But, they might cost you more so choose wisely.
3. Always use the normal spelling when it comes to naming your domain. Some people might be put off with your spelling if you take z for s because it’s childish. Make sure that the spelling of your domain name remains normal whereas the domain name itself is very unique.
4. Never use numbers to make your domain name unique. People have a tendency to forget about numbers and that is the last thing you want your customers to do. Do not confuse your customers by putting numbers into your domain name.
5. Keep your domain name as short as possible. The last thing you want your customers want is a long line of words typed into their address bars. This will easily put off customers or even some people who just want to try out your website.
6. Never use hyphens for your domain name. No one has the time to search and look for the hyphens on their keyboards.
Guidelines for Choosing Your Domain Name
Dec 29th
Do you have plans on establishing an income over the internet? How about an online business? More and more people are trying to set up a business website to have a steady income. Some might try to go for social networking sites while others try to build from scratch and buy a domain on their own.
Buying a domain is easy. You only need an ample amount of cash to purchase the domain. But, the next step becomes the most challenging part of setting up an online business which is choosing a domain-name. Domain-names are the name of your online store. As you already know, there are millions and millions of domains over the internet and it is very difficult to choose a domain name that is unique. So, they try to lengthen their domain names which is a bad idea.
To learn more about domain and domain-names, here are few tips to get your started.
1. Pick an easy name. One that is very easy to remember by people who do not have time to put anything down on a note. It does not need to be cute or artistic, all it needs is something that is easier to remember and unique. Be creative with your names without going over the top.
2. If you want to have your customers full access to your website on a 24/7 basis, make sure you select.com for a business.
3. Do not change the spelling on your domain name. Changing letters like s to z can mislead your customers and would rather choose those websites that are easier to type and remember. Changing the spelling also makes it very hard to remember. Although unique, this kind of domain name can ruin your chances of being known.
4. Do not base your domain-name on numbers. They tend to confuse users and are not easy to memorize. Make sure you use full words and not numbers if you want your customers to remember your domain name.
5. Make sure that you keep your domain-name as short as possible.
6. Lastly, do not add hyphens or any forms of special characters to your domain name. The reason behind this is the same as adding numbers and changing spellings to your domain name.
How Visitors Reach Your Web Site – DNS – The Domain Name System
Dec 28th
As a web site owner, you’ll likely hear the term “DNS” and “name server” from time to time. So what is DNS and how does it work?
Every device that connects to the Internet – whether it’s your home computer, a cell phone or a web hosting server, is issued with an IP (Internet Protocol) address.
An IP address is a unique set of numbers assigned to a device that can’t be used by any other device at the simultaneously.
While your computer may be assigned a different IP address each time you log on to the Internet from home; web hosting services have a range of addresses assigned to them which usually do not change.
It’s far easier to remember a domain name than a set of numbers – and that’s where DNS (Domain Name System) is crucial.
DNS works its magic, translating the name into an IP address number set, courtesy of a DNS server, or name server. The Domain Name System is located on millions of servers around the world, but behaves like a single database.
When you enter a web address into your browser, the browser contacts a name server in order to get the IP address equivalent. When you first connect to the Internet for an online session, which name server your browser will access is already specified and ready for use.
If that name server hasn’t had a request for the domain name you’ve typed in recently and the details aren’t cached, it then contacts a root server. If the root server doesn’t have the information cached, it forwards the request to a server that handles the top level extension, such as.com.au. A server handling all.com.au information would definitely have the IP address details and passes them back.
Once all that is settled, your browser is directed to the name server of the web host to which that IP address is assigned, the host’s server looks at the request and the correct page from the correct site is fetched.
While this all sounds very complex and even the above is greatly simplified, from the time of the request from the browser to the hosting service responding is just seconds – and to think, much of this complexity and the need for domain names is simply due to the fact we aren’t very good at remembering strings of numbers!
