Ouch... that will upset a few of the type two's (The pretend guru's et al - and justly so IMHO).
Makes a change to see someone tell it like it really is.

I guess my only slight quibble would be that what you say is 100% true for a niche market, but what do you do when you are in a market whereby everyone is playing by your rules above. Well I guess hopefully by that time, your business should be making enough to go out there and hire the type 3 (the true webmaster), for those are the ones that can give you the slight edge.

But for the majority of people, you can avoid those who preach SEO Companies/Pretend SEO Company type based hype...
It really can be that simple if you just follow a preset set of rules and guidelines and it doesn't require a degree in web site coding or SEO/SEM/SERP understanding...

Nice read... :)

We all know that link building builds our page rank, but I think that people often overlook the point that you made in this post about it helping to build positive brand image and reputation among site viewers, which can help you to weather a bad storm, should one arise.

I TOTALLY agree that knowing your goal decides your domain name. If your goal is a quick viral business go keyword but if you want a brand name choose a more brandable vessel name.

It is also important to make sure that you are investing in quality link building and that the service that you are hiring is working to project the image that you want on the web instead of just hurrying through to meet their link quota promised to you.
