Dive Into Coiba National Park
Almost everything in Coiba National Park is huge. It’s one of the largest marine parks worldwide. It is the 2nd largest coral reef in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Most importantly, it has huge fish such as orcas, humpback whales, dolphins, whale sharks, barracudas, big snappers, marlin, and hammerhead, among others. These are the huge reasons why most divers prefer Coiba National Park as diving location.
Composed of 38 islands located in the Gulf of Chiriqui, Coiba National Park was hailed as the “outstanding natural laboratory for scientific research” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. It has 430,821 hectares. The park is noted for its virgin forest and impressive marine life.
The eastern part of the island holds Central America’s largest coral reef with 135 hectares. Sea creatures such as orcas and turtles are aggressive not fearing the divers’ presence. Common here are mantas and sharks.
Divers get attracted with the diversity and density of big sea creatures in this area. On bad days, divers can still likely to see awe-inspiring creatures. The park’s world-class diving is known to be a cross between that off Cocos Island in Costa Rica and Galapagos Islands in Equador.

The diving area is located in Damas Bay. From Panama City, a plane ride to Veraguas, Santiago will get you off to the road to Puerto Mutis. Once in Puerto Mutis, a boat can take you to Coiba National Park. Authorizations from the National Environment Authority (ANAM) and the Directorate of Penal Correction have to be secured due to an existing penal colony in the location.
Other activities in the island include fishing, snorkeling, hiking, and bird watching. But diving is a must-try. With huge creatures waiting to be seen underwater, you just can’t afford to miss it. If you do, it’s like missing a huge part of your trip.
